Witty Careers at Uber
On Wednesday 19th September, we hosted a startup and entrepreneurship themed event at the Uber London office. In true Witty Careers style, the evening was a blend of insight into careers, practical skills and tangible advice from BAME female founders.
The evening started off with a welcome from the Uber General Manager, Tom Elvidge, who spoke about how the Uber London office started and the vision for the local office over the next year.
This was followed by a Women @ Uber panel, with panelists from UberHue(Uber’s Black Employees and allies resource group), who shared tips on learning about startups and what skills are needed for jobs at Uber.
Next, the Witty Careers team ran a Startups skills workshop. The task we set for our community was to form teams and create their own startup. They had 30 minutes to create a business model canvas(Business development team), UX design for their mobile app(Product managers), a marketing plan(Marketing team) and sprint plan(Developers). After the timer went off, each team nominated a CEO to pitch their idea. We had some really innovative health, beauty, agriculture and e-commerce business ideas in the room!
To wrap up the day, we invited 3 Black female founders to share lessons from their entrepreneurship journey with us and tips for any aspiring founders.
Urenna Okonkwo, Founder of Cashmere
Dayo Akinrinade, Founder of Africlick
Louise Broni-Mensah, Founder of Shoobs
Throughout the evening, we played a fun networking game- people bingo, which got our community socialising and learning more about different Tech careers.
